Retro Hairstyles as hairstyles fashion go, gets even more retro

Retro Hairstyles and this seasons hair trends. Discovers that the 60’s is fashion’s new favorite Retro Hairstyle decade.

This Autumn/Winter the trends spilling out from all the Fashion Weeks are definitely themes of retro glam and voluminous hair.

Retro Hairstyles, Bee Hive buns, up do’s and high ponytails showed a big 60‘s influence, with soft, loose texture giving it a modern edge. Big hair was everywhere from John Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Julien McDonald and especially from the French Queen of Knits who started to debut in the ’60’s Sonia Rykiel.

So if you have shoulder length or below hair then this season is for you. Start thinking high, loose ponytails and back combed, quiffed up fringes.

Try placing your ponytail just on the crown of your head, then try some very gentle back brushing from half way down to the base, this will just fatten out your ponytail. Then take a small 2 inch section and separate from the rest, take this ribbon of hair and wrap it around the base covering over the ponytail you’ve used secure then end with a grip and some hairspray, again this gives your ponytail some height and lends it that retro feel.

Remember, it’s about high hair, but most of all a soft, tousled texture, so don’t try too hard to be perfect. Soft finishing hairsprays are your best friend right now, try L’Oreal Elnett 400ml, available from Boots at £6.00 or for more humidity protection try Redken’s Fashion Work 12 at £12.00.

For medium length hair you’re going to go big and wide, blow dry your roots upside down, especially the crown and sides, then use a round brush to really add fullness and turn those ends under. Again, a little gentle backbrushing to add texture and lift, don’t over do it though. Take a thick section on the crown and gently brush down from the middle to the base about two or three times, the same at the side areas, use your hairspray to add a little pliability to soft hair. Remember, it’s about disheveled chic, so don’t worry about perfection.

Don’t think because you have short hair you have to miss out. Use your hair spray and brush to tease some volume into your crown, then very gently sweep the front and fringe from a low side parting and gently back brush the top layers to add that hazy texture.

If you don’t fancy DIY search the internet for Fashion Week A/W ’11 and you’ll see lots of images you can take to your hairdresser. Have fun with your hair spray and this autumn get some 60’s free spirit in your hair.
