The introduction of new non-smoking laws in England has provided smokers with a real incentive to kick the habit.

Barnsley-wide Global Hour Pharmacy group can provide help and advice on ways to quit smoking altogether – and points out that smokers can now choose from various over-the-counter methods.

Asif Khan from Global Hour offers some timely advice: “There is more help available than ever before with stop smoking aids such as Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT) coming in various forms including patches, gum and lozenges to help ease physical withdrawal symptoms.”

NICOTINE GUM:

Chewing NRT gum provides flexible doses of nicotine which allows smokers to control their cravings. Gum should be chewed slowly and then ‘parked’ between the cheek and gum to allow nicotine to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

NICOTINE PATCHES:

These provide a simple and discreet method of delivering a controlled nicotine dose, using 16-hour patches or ones which are left in place all the time.

INHALATOR:

This is the only form of NRT designed to address both the physical and behavioural aspects of smoking. It consists of a mouthpiece and replacement nicotine cartridge, suitable for smokers who miss the action of smoking.

NICOTINE NASAL SPRAY:

This is appropriate for heavy smokers and delivers nicotine to be absorbed quickly through the nose lining.

LOZENGE:

Available in different strengths for heavy and light smokers.

NICOTINE MICROTAB:

This is for smokers who prefer a product that does not draw attention to their stop smoking efforts. A small tablet is placed under the tongue to dissolve slowly, releasing controlled levels of nicotine.
